Two Lake Oswego Homes Recognized for Remodeling Excellence
May 1, 2008
| Lake Oswego, OR. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) has named two homes in Lake Oswego as regional winners in the 2008 Contractor of the Year (CotY) awards. The homes are now eligible for national awards which will be announced on March 15 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Contractors from seven regions around the country vie for the prestigious Contractor of the Year awards on an annual basis. The homes, remodeled by Metke Remodeling and Woodworking in Lake Oswego, garnered top honors in the categories of ‘Entire House Over $1,000,000’ and ‘Entire House $250,000 to $500,000’. “We are delighted for our clients and friends, the Hamlin’s and Burgess’’, said Jeff Metke, president of Metke Remodeling and Woodworking. “Not only did their remodeling projects exceed their expectations, but now their homes have been recognized as among the best in the country.”
According to Julie Hamlin, “All I wanted was an oversized playroom for my children”, but her husband Tom had a few more additions in mind.
The project, which took two and a half years from start to finish, started with a 6,000 square foot, three car garage house and added 5,500 square feet of living space including a solarium/media entertainment room, state-of-the-art gym, sauna, pool bath, two full guest suites, a mahogany paneled library, office, home gym, nanny’s suite and a 1,400 square foot/three car auto museum. And that’s just the inside! |

| Outside, the Hamilins’ replaced the concrete driveway to create a motor court, added an outdoor kitchen with brick and stone counters, a 20’x40’ pool and integrated spa as well as a brick fireplace and patio. Sustainability was also important and reflected in energy efficient radiant floor heating and a new power plant with 95% efficient gas boiler. An existing wetland area was enlarged, deepened and enhanced with indigenous plants and poor draining clay soils were replaced with proper drainage and a sand base. The Hamlin’s home has also been awarded “Best Whole House Remodel - $1 Million and Above” by the Home Builders Association of Metropolitan Portland. Eryn and Marshal Burgess both grew up in Lake Oswego. “We loved the experience of living and growing up on a lake, and we wanted a home where we would have that same experience with our children that we had as kids,” explained Eryn. At first the ‘60s style ranch was adequate for their small family of three, but four years later they knew they needed to expand and significantly update to accommodate their growing family.
The results are impressive. The home was expanded by 962 square feet. The new master suite, and extended garage, along with high vaulted roof trusses and cultured stone veneer significantly enhanced the curb appeal and interior livability of the home. Two new bedrooms, a home office, family room, laundry and powder bath were completely transformed. White tongue and groove ceilings and rustic hickory flooring were incorporated to maintain some of the original lake cottage feel while beautiful alder cabinetry, granite counters, and natural stone floors combine to create a luxurious space. |

Judging for regional awards took place at the Association’s national headquarters in Des Plaines, Illinois, in mid-January. An impartial panel of judges who are experts within the industry and associated fields selected winners based on each entrant’s “before and after” photography and project description. Judging was based on problem solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation, degree of difficulty, and entry presentation. To be considered for a CotY Award, a company must be a NARI member in good standing. NARI members represent an elite group from the approximately 800,000 companies and individuals in the U.S. identifying themselves as remodelers.
‘This is a terrific honor and well deserved recognition of our client’s vision as well as of the talented group of partners who worked on these projects – Bob Moreland at MCM Architects, Tina Barclay at Barclay Interiors, Michael Boardman at Boardman Landscape Architecture, home designer Keith Abel and Sandy Hayes of Hayes Designs. Our first priority is to our clients who entrust us with their dreams – winning these awards is just icing on the cake!” replied Jeff. |
